Hi, I’m Shelby!

I’m the black thumb behind Moth & Scythe. Welcome! It’s so good to see you. Thank you for stopping by!

a little about me

Shelby Voeltz is a visual artist known for her work with insects, bones, and preserved botanicals. Her art, which ranges from natural history museumesque displays to fantastical creations, showcases her commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. Shelby participates in "vulture culture," using insects and animals that have died of natural or predatory causes. She meticulously sources her materials, often incorporating vintage elements, ensuring that no life is harmed for her work. Seen along roadsides gathering nature’s fallen treasures, Shelby transforms the overlooked remnants of death into stunning, thought-provoking pieces. Through her art, she invites viewers to appreciate the beauty and balance of life and death.

my mission

At Moth & Scythe, our mission is to ethically and sustainably capture and celebrate the beauty of nature through unique, captivating art. We are committed to creating one-of-a-kind pieces that foster a deep connection to the natural world, all while ensuring no harm comes to living creatures. Our passion for preserving and honoring nature guides every creation, making each piece a testament to our love for the beauty surrounding us.

A little more about me

I’m originally from Rockford, IL, but moved to Minneapolis, MN in 2004. I live in a charming “minimal traditional” in Northeast Minneapolis that I love, but I dream of living in an open, historic home in Saint Paul (one with all the beautiful built-ins and antique windows). I have a pre-school-aged daughter named Sloane that I’m absolutely obsessed with, a Blue Heeler (Ari), and a Calico cat (Verna). In 2023, I wrote a children’s book about enoughness, illustrated by my favorite artist of all time (DC Ice). During the day, I’m a pediatric dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist, and I’m passionate about supporting patients and their families through their diagnoses and beyond.
